It is about starting with a sound machine, making small corrections, and checking the conditions that cause the belt to wander in the first place.

On a properly built 2x72 grinder, tracking should be fast and repeatable. Once you learn the sequence, you can swap from a coarse ceramic belt to a fine finishing belt, bring it to center, and get back to grinding without stopping your workflow.

Start With the Grinder Off

Before touching the tracking adjustment, shut the grinder down and let every wheel stop completely. Remove the belt if you need to inspect the machine. A tracking problem is sometimes just a setup issue, but it can also point to a damaged belt, debris on a wheel, or a component that has worked loose under load.

Do Not Track a Belt Against the Wheel Edge

A belt does not need to run dead center on every wheel to work well. What matters is that it stays stable and has enough clearance that it will not climb off the edge when pressure is applied. On a platen, many makers prefer the belt positioned so its edge is close to, but not rubbing, the platen edge. That can give useful access for certain knife profiles and cleanup work. A belt that is deliberately run off the edge for slack-belt work is a separate technique. Do it only when the setup is stable and you understand where the belt will travel under pressure.

If Tracking Will Not Stay Put, Check These Causes

When tracking needs constant correction, the adjustment knob is rarely the root problem. Start with the easy checks before assuming a wheel or frame issue.

Belt tension is inconsistent

Too little tension lets the belt flutter and wander. Excess tension can put unnecessary load on bearings and components while masking another alignment problem. Use the tension range intended for your grinder and make sure the tension mechanism moves freely.

The tracking wheel is dirty or damaged

The tracking wheel does the steering. If its crown is packed with grit or its surface is damaged, the belt may not respond predictably. Inspect it closely. A quality drive and tracking wheel setup with clean, true-running surfaces makes quick tracking adjustment far easier.

A wheel is not square to the belt path

After changing attachments, install the belt, tension it, and repeat the low-speed tracking check. Pay close attention with small wheels because the belt has less surface area supporting it and any edge damage becomes noticeable fast. With large contact wheels, verify tracking at the belt speeds used for stock removal, where belt force and vibration are higher.

That routine takes less time than recovering from a belt that has shredded against a wheel flange.

For knife makers, verify tracking before grinding critical bevels or plunges. For fabrication work, check it before leaning into weld cleanup on a contact wheel. For fine finishing, take the extra few seconds to confirm the belt is stable before putting a scratch pattern on a nearly finished part.
